The Invisible Heat: Understanding the Difference Between Near-Infrared and Far-Infrared Rays

We love infrared saunas and are excited to see that they have become increasingly popular as a way to relax, physically recover and detoxify the body. These saunas use infrared radiation to heat the body directly, unlike traditional saunas that use steam or dry heat to heat the air around the body. While there are different types of infrared radiation, most infrared saunas use either near-infrared or far-infrared radiation to achieve their therapeutic effects. Let’s explore the difference between near-infrared and far-infrared radiation and discuss how they are used in infrared saunas for various health benefits.

Infrared radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation that is invisible to the human eye but can be detected as heat. It is divided into three categories: near-infrared (NIR), mid-infrared (MIR), and far-infrared (FIR), depending on their wavelengths.

Near-infrared radiation (NIR) has wavelengths between 750 and 1,400 nanometers (nm), which is just beyond the visible spectrum of light. It is commonly used in medical imaging, remote sensing, and optical communication. However, there are safety concerns associated with NIR radiation, particularly with regard to eye safety. NIR radiation can damage the retina and cause cataracts, which are cloudy areas in the eye's lens that can impair vision. Prolonged exposure to high levels of NIR radiation can also cause skin damage, such as sunburn and skin cancer.

Another concern related to NIR radiation is electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure. EMF is a type of radiation that is emitted by electrical devices, such as smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, and power lines.
